Cheer Story: Oxbow Celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day

August 12, 2026 Posted in Cheer Stories

With support from the 4 Seasons Participation Grant, the Town of Oxbow hosted a meaningful National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration that brought people together to learn, create, and connect through Indigenous culture.

Led by Indigenous facilitators Emilee Steffensen and Candace McArthur, the free community event invited participants to explore Indigenous traditions through hands-on activities. Guests painted alongside Emilee, learned about the history and significance of bannock with Candace, and gathered over tea while their bannock baked. The relaxed setting encouraged conversation, questions, and the sharing of stories across generations.

One of the biggest successes of the day was seeing Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members learning together. Children, parents, grandparents, and seniors all participated side by side, creating artwork, baking bannock, and building new connections. Participants left with their own paintings, fresh bannock, and a greater appreciation for Indigenous cultures and traditions.

Making the event free to attend was an important part of its success. Grant funding covered the costs of Indigenous facilitators and program supplies, removing financial barriers and making it possible for families from Oxbow and surrounding communities to participate.

Beyond the activities themselves, the event created opportunities for meaningful relationship-building. Learning directly from Indigenous facilitators through art, food, and conversation helped foster understanding and celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day in an inclusive and welcoming way.

The event is a great example of how community partnerships and accessible programming can create lasting connections while celebrating the rich cultures, histories, and traditions of Indigenous peoples.
