Cheer Story: Performing Arts Expands Fundraising Opportunities in Community

November 22, 2019 by southeastdistrict

Stoughton is one of many communities in the south east which offers an annual dinner theatre to raise funds for the community. This is a unique opportunity where local volunteers come together to use “drama and the performing arts” as a method of fundraising. Communities need to invent new ways to raise revenue every year to sustain the infrastructure and activities that exist, as they cannot just depend on grants and user fees. Expand your community’s fundraising possibilities with a diversified approach, just like the community of Stoughton does!

Submitted by Danielle Hoffman

This year’s Stoughton Community Dinner Theatre/Show is called “Buying the Moose” by Michael G. Wilmot. The Stoughton Community Players put it on and there are approximately 70 volunteers that make it happen from door people, servers, kitchen helpers to the onstage actors, set and light people! It takes place the last weekend of November and the first weekend of December. This will be our fifth year.

The intent of this event was originally started to raise funds for the swimming pool liner, and once we achieved that we opened it up to other community groups. Usually six (6) community groups and Legion receive funds from the event. On average, we raise a minimum of $20,000 per year. The Stoughton Community Players have taken the event over from the Town to help bring arts and theatre back to our community.

Volunteers and sponsorship/support from the community, businesses and RM is what makes our event a true success!

We believe that this type of event brings so many people together from so many age groups and backgrounds. It helps bring a sense of community back, even if it is just for four (4) nights, as everyone comes together! Stoughton Community Players is hoping to bring back more theatre to our community. We are planning a One Act Pub Night in the spring that will feature two – one act plays just for one night! It will be a blast!

Annual Recreation Practitioner Roundtable

November 8, 2019 by southeastdistrict

South East Sport, Culture & Recreation District hosted the annual Recreation Practitioner Roundtable in Indian Head on November 7, 2019. Over 15 attendees from across the district gathered for this peer network meeting. These events are learning forums where leaders share wisdom, connect with each other, and explore the big questions they face in their roles! The day featured roundtable hot topics and a presentation from Tami Scott, Community Development Coordinator, Oxbow, on their pool project where the community came together to rebuild a new pool totaling $1.76 million! Tami shared the successes and challenges of carrying out such a large-scale project for a small community of 1,300 people. Their old pool was built in 1973 and operated for 45 years.

Also, Dan Gallagher, Field Consultant, Saskatchewan Parks & Recreation Association, along with Alicia Stewart, Redvers Recreation Director, presented on creating an asset management plan for recreation facilities and shared a project that was implemented in Redvers where an inventory of assets was completed. Asset management is seen as a part of overall planning where communities can proactively anticipate deterioration, repairs, and replacements rather than having to react to them! It also helps with budgeting and determining needs for insurance coverage. Templates and tools for asset management are available to communities through the district and SPRA!

Thank you to those who presented and attended our meeting! It is fantastic to hear about all the great things that our recreation professionals bring to our communities!

2019 ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Adults

October 30, 2019 by southeastdistrict

Despite growing media attention and increased social awareness about the downsides of living an inactive life, few adults living in Canada are meeting national guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each week. The report card states that the inactivity crisis among adults living in Canada is a complex issue that requires a complex remedy. A comprehensive and coordinated solution that involves multiple partners and all orders of government is needed. Aligning efforts and drawing on research to inform future policies and programming is a must.

Highlights of some of the recommendations from the report include:

  • Policies and practices in communities should support people in getting physically active. For example, communities should ensure that sidewalks are in good condition year round to enable walking and wheeling in all seasons.
  • Policies and practices in communities should support people to move more. Walking is an easy way to increase steps.
  • New evidence supports that any movement during the day is good and incorporating shorter bouts of moderate to vigorous physical activity into one’s day is beneficial (i.e., a few minutes at a time). This should be supported in workplaces, educational settings, leisure policies and health promotion campaigns.
  • Policy-makers should develop educational campaigns about the risks of prolonged sitting which are distinct from those of physical inactivity.
  • Communities should ensure that Official Community Plans integrate inclusive (all ages, abilities and cultures) physical activity through multifaceted approaches across community settings.
  • Communities should ensure dedicated funding is available to facility and infrastructure repair/maintenance.
  • Communities and organizations should promote and implement sharing agreements between community organizations (especially in rural communities)
