Defining Roles: Master the Volunteer Job Description

The importance of planning for volunteer roles will help in many facets of the volunteer experience. Taking the time to define your needs will help you in many areas, including marketing and recruitment, screening and risk mitigation, onboarding and retention, and performance management and evaluation, to name a few.

Whether with new or veteran board volunteers, sub-committee volunteers, staff, or general volunteers, a firm understanding of each person’s role in the ecology of their institution is necessary for a team to succeed. A job description should outline expectations, limitations, and tasks, even if volunteer-led.  Job Descriptions are a best practice that saves time and frustration and makes recruiting AND retaining volunteers easier.

Building a role description also allows you to see where your gaps in support are and whether you need to be flexible in your roles. This workshop will explain the importance of job descriptions (volunteer and staff).  Tips and tools will also be included to help further these best practices at respective institutions, whether as volunteers or staff members. The goal is that by the end of this webinar, attendees should have an enhanced understanding of why job roles are necessary. They will be provided with examples and tools to improve their confidence in proceeding with this critical aspect of governance.
