Nuit Blanche is an annual, overnight festival celebrating contemporary art, which transforms public spaces into temporary art installations, performances, and cultural experiences. The term "Nuit Blanche" is French and translates to "White Night" or "Sleepless Night", a name that reflects the all-night nature of the event. Originating in Paris in 2002, the concept has since spread to cities worldwide, including Toronto and Montreal, where it attracts millions of visitors. Typically associated with large urban centres, Brandon, Manitoba, joins the ranks. Wheat City Nuit Blanche is co-produced by Leanne Zacharias and Lucie Lederhendler. They will reflect on how they altered this event to make sense for their community. Adaptation, trial and error and patience have led to an annual event at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Brandon, Manitoba). It is also the most attended event at the gallery while celebrating the uniqueness of their community.
You don’t need to be a populous urban centre to make unique events happen in your community. What you need is ingenuity, a vision (or plan), an understanding of what makes you unique, and committed organisers. This chat will dig into the history of Wheat City Nuit Blanche, what has and has not worked, what makes it successful and how they adapted to make this event their own.
